New Keyboard
2025-03-07
I have acquired and assembled a new keyboard. I blame my brother for drawing me down the rabbit hole of mechanical keyboards; and then farther down the sub-hole of ortholinear keyboards. I went from using the built-in keyboard on my laptop, to a Logitech G10 (eventually adding my own key-caps to that), jumped to a Wormier K66 for work (also from my brother), to finally getting the Nyquist Rev 5 from Keeb.io.
I went with blank DSA key caps from FlashQuark and Durock Shrimp silent tactile switches on this keyboard. This fits my pattern of assuming I want to do the hardest version of whatever I’m undertaking. I am not a touch-typist right now. At least, I am not a home-row typist. I am a “two-or-three-fingers-look-at-the-keys-fairly-often” typist. So changing the physical layout and removing any clues as to what key I’m using is going to be a real change for me. I did this to force myself to become a touch-typer.
I’m using keybr.com to develop this neglected skill. After a single evening of practice using the new keyboard, my average speed was 13 wpm.
My normal average is somewhere close to 45 wpm. So, I’m not the Fastest Keys in the West to begin with. No matter which way I slice it, I have plenty of room for improvement. My goal is to hit 75 wpm by the end of the year. You can keep me honest and see my stats here.
